About The Employer The Merced County Office of Education assists Merced County’s 20 school districts through support and oversight of curriculum and instruction, alternative education, business services, early education, technology, migrant education, special education, and teacher credentialing. MCOE is led by the elected Merced County Superintendent of Schools and governed by the Merced County Board of Education. While serving as a focal point to facilitate local school/government/community partnerships, MCOE is responsible for the fiscal oversight of each school district in Merced County, hears appeals for student expulsion hearings and interdistrict transfers and operates Green Meadows Outdoor School.

Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, to assure that parents and/or primary care givers of children enrolled in Head Start whose primary language is other than English receive the information necessary to make informed decisions, and to fully participate in Head Start programs, activities and services. To travel from site to site within Merced County to conduct work. This position has a flexible schedule, including evening hours. This position may be full or part-time depending upon assignment. Work schedule is flexible and may require evening hours.

Print MERCED COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION POSITION TITLE: Translator/Interpreter for Head Start SALARY RANGE: HSCS/25 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and/or Training: High school diploma or recognized equivalent. Formal training in the English and Spanish languages. Interpreter/Translator training. Experience: One year experience translating/interpreting English and Spanish. Credentials and/or Skills: Communicate orally and in writing using correct usage, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation in the Spanish and English language. Knowledge of technical terminology. Knowledge of electronic communication devices that permit simultaneous interpretation.Ability to listen in one language while speaking in another. Ability to use a computer, maintain detailed records accurately and in a timely manner; prepare reports and summaries with general directions. Ability to plan and organize work; meet schedules and time lines, and work independently with a minimum of supervision. Proof of valid CA driver’s license and minimum amount of liability insurance required by law. DMV printout required. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Education and/or Training: Associate Degree Experience: N/A Credentials and/or Skills: Certification as an Interpreter/Translator, highly desirable. Interpret orally for staff and parents at Policy Council meetings, parent meetings, parent conferences, recruitment and enrollment, home visits, IEP meetings, parent workshops, parent training events and other parent activities. 2. Utilize specialized vocabulary to assist families to understand results of health, dental, nutritional, and developmental screenings and assessments; to enable parents to give informed consent to services and referrals; to enable parents to participate fully in decision-making about their children. 3. Translate written material from English into Spanish, including Policy Council By-laws and operational procedures, agendas, minutes, and other documents necessary to Policy Council business; parent manuals and handbooks; informational brochures; flyers and announcements; application forms, questionnaires, student and family information forms, screening results; health care and behavioral plans; and other written materials. 4. Translate from Spanish to English written communication from parents; and official records such as birth and/or baptismal records, health records, financial records, or other records required by the Head Start Program. 5. Use a computer to transcribe translated materials, maintain records and generate reports. 6. Meet regularly with staff, program managers, Site Supervisors, Master Teachers and others. Attend staff meetings, parent meetings, parent conferences, IEP meetings, Policy Council meetings, in-service trainings, workshops and other meetings, as directed. 7. Comply with MCOE policies and procedures, administrative regulations, State of California Health and Welfare Codes including Title 22, Head Start Performance Standards, and other applicable state and federal regulations. 8. Other related work as assigned. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees in this position must have the ability to: 1. Sit for extended periods of time. 2. See and read a computer terminal and printed matter with or without vision aids. 3. Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone with or without hearing aids. 4. Speak so that others may understand at normal levels and on the telephone. 5. Enter data into a computer terminal, operate mainframe/personal computers, operate standard office equipment and dial a telephone. 6. Operate a motor vehicle. 7. Stand, walk, bend over, grasp, reach overhead, stoop, twist, push, pull and move lift and/or carry 0 to 40 pounds to waist height. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employees in this position will be required to work in a standard office, client homes, Head Start center environment and come in contact with MCOE/district staff and the public.
