Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins? focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine?strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.


Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a remote work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team?s core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.


The Office of Development Communications helps Johns Hopkins realize its mission of providing knowledge for the world by communicating philanthropy?s impact and articulating fundraising priorities.


Philanthropy is essential to the continued success of Johns Hopkins and our people. We are embarking on our boldest comprehensive fundraising campaign yet. The campaign will launch publicly in fall 2025 and includes initiatives that will literally reshape our landscape and build community (capital projects), revolutionize the way we use technology and share data, usher in a new era of health- and wellness-focused care, and strengthen our ability to meet and anticipate the needs of a rapidly changing world in everything from arts, humanities, and education to international relations, government policy, and public health.


The Senior Writer reports to the Senior Director of Development and Campaign Communications and is a member of the Development Communications team. This individual will collaborate with members of the Development Communications team and work closely with divisional and central leaders and teams across DAR and Johns Hopkins to develop compelling campaign communications ? highlighting priorities of the campaign and producing content for key constituent audiences. This position may involve supervisory responsibilities in the future. This highly visible position requires integrity, discretion, strong interpersonal skills, ability to navigate complex situations, excellent attention to detail, and exceptional written and verbal communication skills.


Key responsibilities: 

This individual will be considered a lead writer for the campaign and will be counted on for:

  • Developing language and producing materials (case statements, concept pieces, one-pagers, etc.) in support of overarching campaign priorities.
  • Providing writing and editing assistance and consulting as needed to University and Medicine divisions in support of their respective campaign priorities.
  • Serving as a liaison between central DAR and University and Medicine divisions.
  • Creating original content for various channels and modalities, including researching, writing, revising, and obtaining required approvals.
  • Interviewing donors, alumni, university leaders, faculty members, grateful patients, and students as needed.
  • Project managing, including liaising with external vendors (photographers, designers, and others).
  • Assisting with written remarks (scripting) for campaign events as needed.
  • Assisting with media relations for major gift and campaign announcements as needed.




Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Three years related experience. Writing samples may be requested during the selection process.




Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years related experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Familiarity with higher education and academic medicine preferred.
  • Experience managing internal clients and external vendors.
