Job Description:

  • Oversees all publications produced by ARD Communications, ensuring they advance the University's mission and support the work of Alumni Relations and Development.
  • Partners with publications staff campus-wide, identifying opportunities for collaboration and amplification of content and sharing of best practices. Serves as the University lead for all comprehensive campaign-related publications.
  • Partners with ARDâ™s senior leaders to plan stories that cover the depth and breadth of the University's intellectual and cultural life and that align with the University's initiatives.
  • Suggests content and strategies intended to strengthen affinity, build pride of affiliation, and inspire engagement through digital and print publications. Identifies opportunities to support philanthropy through targeted distribution of publications content.
  • Serves as the editor of the University of Chicago Magazine, ensuring it engages its audience through compelling stories that capture the intellectual excitement of a world-class university, while maintaining its high standards of readability and credibility.
  • Works closely with the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications to develop video, audio, and interactive items that build on print storytelling, encouraging readers to interact with and experience stories in multiple formats.
  • Manages managers and professional staff in duties such as setting publishing schedules, coordinating publication plans, approving financial and contractual terms, overseeing the peer review process, negotiating contracts with authors and agents and creating project budgets and schedules.
  • Provides leadership and supervision to senior and junior editors.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelorâ™s or advanced degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum five years of professional experience in nonprofit management, development, alumni relations, marketing, public relations, sales or similar work.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University as well as the technology tools available to the Office of Alumni Relations and Development, including Griffin (the University's Donor Relationship Management System), Microsoft Windows computer environment, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.

Working Conditions

  • This position has a hybrid work schedule which includes weekly in office presence.
  • Standard office environment.
  • Travel to campus and/or non-campus locations for University business.
  • Work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • This position is located in Hyde Park at 5235 South Harper Court.
