Job Classification: Police Officer
The Barberton Police Department is hiring for the position of Police Officer. Candidates must complete the department application, FCRA Disclosure and Authorization Form, and the FrontLine National exam through the National Testing Network (NTN). Additionally, candidates are required to complete the PHQ and Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) through their NTN account. It is recommended to complete these questionnaires promptly to avoid delays.
Salary Information: $24.31 - $35.96 per hour. The starting wage is based on factors such as OPOTA Certification, academic qualifications (Bachelor's or Associate Degree in Criminal Justice), and prior full-time experience as an Ohio certified peace officer.

Job Requirements:
Age: Must be at least 21 years old at the time of examination. Candidates cannot be over 35 years of age at the time of examination unless exempt under ORC 124.41. Currently commissioned applicants from another jurisdiction must not exceed 45 years of age at the time of examination.
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or a naturalized citizen.
Education: High school diploma or GED.
Driver's License: Must possess a valid Ohio driver's license.
Language: Ability to read and speak English.
Vision and Hearing: Must meet department standards.
Experience: Not required.
Probation: Successful candidates must complete a one-year probationary period, or 18 months if OPOTA certification is not obtained before hire.
Licensure: Must obtain Police Officer Certification from the State of Ohio within one year of hire.
Physical Agility Testing: Candidates must have the strength and physical ability to perform essential job functions. Selected applicants will need to obtain a certificate of completion for the physical agility test administered by the Police Agility Program at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C). Candidates who completed the O.P.O.T.A. Basic Peace Officer Academy within one year of the written exam can submit proof of their physical fitness testing from the academy instead of taking the Tri-C test.
Physical Requirements: Candidates must be non-smokers and non-users of tobacco products. They must also meet physical fitness and medical standards, maintain correctable vision to 20/20, and possess normal color vision and hearing.
Additional Considerations: A criminal conviction record may disqualify candidates from employment due to the nature and conditions of the work.
Testing and Screening:
Applicants will undergo a comprehensive selection process, including:
Written Civil Service exam
Background check
Physical agility tests
Oral interview
Psychological evaluation
Medical examination
Polygraph examination
Extra credit is available for those who pass the written test with a minimum score of 70%, up to a maximum of 25%. Candidates who resign during probation will be required to reimburse the City for testing and training costs.
Extra Credit Opportunities (Maximum 25%):
Military Credit (20%): Honorably discharged veterans or those in reserve duty with at least 180 days of active duty.
Reserve Military Credit (15%): For applicants in good standing in reserve military components, including the Ohio National Guard, who complete initial training.
Residency Credit (5%): For candidates who have resided within Barberton's corporate limits for at least one year prior to application.
Prior City Employment Credit (Up to 5%): Based on prior satisfactory service with the City, awarded at a rate of 0.1% per month of completed service.
Educational Credit:
Bachelor's Degree (15%): For candidates with a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
Associate's Degree (10%): For candidates with an associate degree in criminal justice from an accredited institution.
Certification Credit (20%): For candidates currently certified by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Council as a Police Officer.
