Job Description

To assemble and install piping, fixtures and equipment used in the distribution and drainage of water and water-carried wastes, air and gas.

This position is to be filled based on Article 20-2-2b—Regular Job Opening filled by the best qualified candidate.

Schedule: Monday-Friday 6:00am-2:15pm

  • Install water mains, service lines, sewer lines, air and gas lines, valves, gauges, pumps and fixtures, including sinks, commodes, dishwashers and disposals.
  • Cut pipe, using threading machine, and bend pipe by hand or with pipe-bending machine.
  • Assemble and install pipe and pipe fittings of brass, cast-iron, copper, lead, glass, plastic and other materials.
  • Join piping by means of treaded, calked, wiped, soldered, brazed, fused or cemented joints.
  • Cut or bore through walls, ceilings or partitions. Test piping systems for leaks, using gauges.
  • Secure pipes to structures with clamps, brackets and hangers.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and job specifications.
  • Prepare records and service reports of materials and time expended.
  • Prepare inventory order lists, order inventory, prepare material take-offs and estimates for various plumbing jobs. 
  • Insure plumbing installations meet appropriate codes and standards.
  • Graduation from high school.
  • State of Michigan journeyman's license.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, equipment, and materials used in the installation and repair of water distribution systems and fixtures.
  • Considerable skill in the operation of plumbing tools and power equipment.
  • State of Michigan certified backflow installer and tester is required within 12 months of the date of hire, as a condition of employment.
  • Medical gas installer (ASSE 6010) certification tester is required within 12 months of the date of hire, as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion in relationships with others.
  • Ability to work well within a teamwork environment.
  • Considerable knowledge of plumbing codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
  • Frequent lifting and bending required with the execution of daily work duties, tool employment, equipment relocation and installation.
  • Reasonable manual strength and dexterity.
  • Ability to observe safety precautions in the operation of tools and power equipment.
  • Reasonable knowledge of the maintenance requirements of water lines, fixtures, and controls.
  • Experience in health care facility plumbing, maintenance and/or construction experience in all phases of plumbing; commercial & industrial.
  • 5 years of hospital construction and renovation work
  • Willingness to work overtime and to adjust working hours to meet project requirements          
  • Knowledge of Microsoft products, Smart Phone technology, tablet technology and computers.
  • Ability to do on-line research
  • Experience working with an automated work order system.
  • Proven ability to provide professional customer service
  • Ability to make and keep commitments.
  • Exceptional written, electronic and verbal communication.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the U-M Skilled Trades Union, Inc., which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
