Job Summary:
As a Medical Coder, you'll play a key role in the healthcare field by converting medical diagnoses, procedures, and services into universal codes. This crucial function ensures accurate billing, proper reimbursement, and compliance with regulations. You will review patient medical records and apply the correct codes based on established guidelines and regulations.
Responsibilities:
Review patient medical records to accurately abstract and assign diagnostic (ICD-10-CM) and procedural codes (CPT, HCPCS) according to physician documentation.
Ensure coding accuracy and adherence to coding conventions, official guidelines, and regulatory requirements, including HIPAA and CMS standards.
Communicate with physicians or healthcare providers for any necessary clarifications or additional documentation to ensure precise coding.
Analyze medical records and documentation to identify and address any discrepancies or coding issues.
Meet productivity and accuracy standards as set by the organization or industry benchmarks.
Stay current with updates to coding guidelines, regulations, and reimbursement methodologies.
Collaborate with healthcare team members, including physicians, nurses, and administrators, to ensure accurate coding and billing.
Assist with coding audits, compliance reviews, and quality improvement efforts.
Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with privacy and security regulations.
Provide coding support and expertise to billing and revenue cycle management teams as needed.
Engage in ongoing professional development to enhance coding skills and knowledge.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
Certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or similar credential from a recognized organization (e.g., AAPC, AHIMA).
Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes.
Proficiency in coding guidelines and systems, including ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II.
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in coding assignments.
Ability to interpret and analyze complex medical documentation.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with healthcare professionals.
Experience with coding software and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
Capability to work independently and efficiently in a dynamic environment.
Familiarity with insurance reimbursement processes and billing requirements is a plus.
Experience:
Previous experience in medical coding or healthcare documentation is preferred. Entry-level positions are available for candidates with relevant education and certification.
