Michigan State University's Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is seeking to hire a Laboratory Technologist to perform analytical procedures including the extraction, purification, and chemical derivatization of xenobiotics from biological samples following laboratory generated standard operating procedures. Under the leadership of the lab supervisor/section chief, conducts quantitative and qualitative analyses by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS), gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS and GCMS/MS), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ultraviolet/visible spectrometry (UV/VS), and ICP for unknown compounds. Implements quality control/assurance procedures and maintains and repairs analytical instrumentation per manufacturer guidelines.

K nowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in science with course work in applied science medical laboratory technician; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic laboratory techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; the job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training; may require successful completion/continued maintenance of accessibility standards.
Experience with chromatographic separation techniques and chemical detection including mass spectrometry. Experience with analytical equipment use and maintenance and lab safety techniques is essential. A degree in chemistry or biochemistry is a plus. Four year degree in a science field including a six-month internship at an approved institution laboratory. W ork experience in analytical chemistry or toxicology and experience in a high-volume diagnostic laboratory.
