Duties
Examples of Duties
- Assists Patrol Division in processing and photographing crime scenes and traffic accidents; processing major crime scenes
- Search and recovery of latent fingerprints, palm prints, trace evidence, DNA and other physical evidence
- Preparing preliminary and supplemental reports referencing crime scene processing completed and investigative measures taken, to complete thorough and detailed documentation of the scene
- Preparing casts and collecting and preserving evidence from the crime scene to prepare evidence for submission to the Lab for examination
- Entering property into RMS (Records Management System) evidence voucher database
- Packaging, preserving, and storing evidence and maintaining chain of custody
- With proper training, the ability to analyze and comparing latent prints recovered from crime scenes and submit them into the SPEX/local AFIS database system
- Work as part of an on-call schedule and/or rotation to respond to scenes, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Performs related duties as required
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:
- General knowledge of police department policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
- General knowledge of the City Code and NC General Statutes
- General knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a property and evidence program.
- General knowledge of methods, procedures, principles, practices, and terminology used, property and evidence handling, recording, preservation, storage, and release
- General knowledge of office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications
- Ability to learn and maintain all protocols in the chain of custody
- Demonstrated ability to receive, process, and document various evidence and property
- Demonstrated ability to operate a digital camera and other equipment used at crime scenes
- Demonstrated ability to identify details, such as fingerprints and crime scene evidence
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with citizens and police officers in a courteous, firm, and tactful manner
- Demonstrated ability to listen and have strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to learn and operate the Faro scanner and Scene diagraming software
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalency
- Minimum of one year of work experience in police work, laboratory work, or related field
- Minimum of one year of experience with Microsoft Windows Office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position may also be considered.
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field
- Two years or more of work experience as a Crime Scene Investigator
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- The physical duties include but are not limited to; walking, standing, bending, stooping, operating a motor vehicle, carrying up to 40 pounds, reaching, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
- The employee regularly operates a variety of machinery and equipment, including vehicles, telephones, computers, calculators, copiers, etc.
- Work necessitates visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned in preparing and completing reports, accounting, transcription, computer terminal viewing and extensive reading.
- The employee must be willing to work in all types of weather conditions, heights, different terrain and work with bloodborne pathogens as well as hazardous materials.
- Working conditions include inside and outside environmental conditions.
- This position will involve an on-call status.
